In February 2021, ORSP introduced “IDRUM”, a three-tiered framework for supporting Interdisciplinary Research at UM.

1. Discovery Circles (the spark): Transactional support for gatherings or “Pop-Ups,” where scholars can interact to form new leads for interdisciplinary research (IDR);
2. Exploration Groups (the oxygen): Short-term support for nascent groups to explore their potential to act on a common IDR interest, potentially leading to:
3. Strike Teams (the fuel): Focused support to drive committed IDR proposal teams to grant submission.
