The Showcase: A Celebration of Research and Scholarly Activity at the University of Mississippi

April 30, 2025

The Office for Research and Economic Development will present a showcase of the University of Mississippi’s research and scholarly activity on April 30 at The Inn at Ole Miss.

Anyone who contributes to research or scholarly activity at the University of Mississippi is invited to be a part of The Showcase, including:

  • UM faculty, staff and students who conduct research or creative scholarship
  • UMMC collaborators
  • UM resource providers

The Showcase goals are as follows:

  • to celebrate the outstanding research and scholarly work taking place in all disciplines at the University of Mississippi;
  • to showcase projects, discoveries, and creations in an engaging and accessible manner, ensuring that everyone—regardless of expertise—can learn something new, and
  • to inspire collaboration and engagement across departments, disciplines, and programs.

To Apply for The Showcase

This event is free and open to the public. All interested in attending or presenting are invited to register online by the priority registration date of March 24. Those wishing to present should sign up for the most appropriate session(s) to showcase their research project, scholarly work, or shared resource. Notifications will be sent by April 1 with further instructions for preparing presentations.  Please contact resdev@olemiss.edu for any inquiries during the process.

The Showcase Sessions

60-Second Pitches: The 60-Second Pitches are designed to present researchers or resources to the UM community with the purpose of inspiring future collaborations.

3-Minute Talks: The 3-Minute Talks are designed to present current projects, activities, or achievements in research or creative scholarship to the UM community.

Slideshows demonstrating other research and scholarly activities and resources will be scrolling throughout the day. Sample resource slides and optional slide templates will be provided to submitters for all slideshow formats:

  • Shared Resources Spotlight: This slideshow will spotlight UM resources that are broadly available to support research and scholarly activities.
  • Grants Spotlight: A second slideshow will spotlight internal grants & externally sponsored programs recently awarded to UM investigators for research and scholarly activities.
  • Fellowships, Prizes, and Awards Spotlight: A third slideshow will spotlight fellowships, awards, and prizes recently won by UM scholars for their research and scholarly activities.
  • Creative Achievement Spotlight: A fourth slideshow will spotlight recent creative achievements of UM scholars, such as books, compositions, artistic creations, recordings, performances, or exhibitions.

Poster Sessions

Posters and visual displays will showcase research and scholarly projects in three concurrent sessions:

  • To the Point. Each poster in this session should present a project’s key finding or insight in such a way that anyone passing by can quickly learn something. More information about this poster format can be found in this video. We can offer design templates and consultations and cover printing for those who wish to try this format.
  • Picture This. Each entry in this session will feature a single image, infographic, visualization, or visual element that conveys the key message about a research finding, creative work, or other scholarly topic, with minimal support from a title, brief caption, or the presenter. The visual can be printed on a material that can be attached to a wooden poster stand with thumbtacks, adhered to a metal wall with magnets, or displayed using some portable stand or medium that the presenter brings to the showcase, fitting within the available space.
  • Traditional Research Posters: This session will feature a limited number of research posters in the more traditional (i.e., technical) style common at academic conferences. We are particularly interested in spotlighting posters that have recently been presented and may have won prizes at other poster competitions.

Speed Networking Session: Participants who sign up for this session will engage in a round-robin series of very short, one-on-one conversations with other participants. By the end of the event, participants should have a promising lead for a possible future collaboration.

Something Different: We are also open to showcasing research or scholarly activity in other modalities besides those envisioned here. When you register, please let us know if you have something different in mind.

Schedule

A schedule will be posted the first week of April, with activities expected to start around 9:00 a.m. with opening remarks and short talks, include an extended networking lunch, and wrap up with an early afternoon poster session and closing remarks before 3:00 p.m.
