Summer Undergraduate Research Group Grants (SURGG) fund small faculty teams to develop and pilot a new, intensive, thematic program of research or creative scholarship during the summer for a small cohort of UM undergraduate students, as a stepping stone to a future competitive external REU-style or training program grant proposal.

SURGG Call for Proposals 2025 (PDF)

The objectives of SURGG grants are two-fold:

  1. To prepare faculty collaborators to submit competitive external funding proposals for undergraduate research activities by designing and conducting a pilot summer program in a thematic area of interest to the faculty team.
  2. To increase and expand opportunities for UM undergraduates to engage in research and creative scholarship.

Submit applications via the InfoReady Review portal to the competition called Undergraduate Research Track-2: Summer Undergraduate Research Group Grants (SURGG) 2025 by deadline noted in the Call for Proposals. Award decisions are expected early March.

FAQ's

Q: Do I need to submit a SPAN form?
A: No, you do not submit a SPAN form.

Q: Can we include student housing costs in the budget?
A: If you are planning to house the students in UM dorms, and pay housing directly, then yes, you can include those costs in the budget. (See the section of https://research.olemiss.edu/resources/students  on Housing).

But, if the students are responsible for their own housing, that’s part of what the stipend should be for. The idea of the stipends is to allow        students to be able to afford to participate in this experience (as opposed to working for pay over the summer).
